The First State Heritage Park at Dover Will Be Open On Memorial Day

The First State Heritage Park at Dover, including Legislative Hall, Delaware Public Archives, the Biggs Museum of American Art, the Old State House Museum, and other Delaware State Museums sites in Dover, will be open on Monday, May 30, for Memorial Day. Tours and exhibits are offered at all of the sites. Admission is free. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The First State Heritage Park at Dover is a partnership of the Department of State, the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, and the Delaware Economic Development Office.

LEGISLATIVE HALL
Guided tours begin hourly, 9 a.m. through 4 p.m.
Tours include the General Assembly chambers, the Governor’s ceremonial office, the portrait gallery of Delaware’s governors and military heroes, Jack Lewis murals, and Delaware State Museums’ exhibit of a selection of items recovered from the De Braak shipwreck.
Delaware Public Archives’ Movie Series:
10:30 a.m. – 11:15 a.m.
The Battle of San Pietro (1945) Directed by John Huston, The Battle of San Pietro is an engrossing documentary film of the savage fighting between American and German forces for control of the Liri Valley in Italy. Over 1,100 American soldiers were killed while trying to take this strategic location. (33 minutes)
100 Stories: An Exhibit
Showcasing 100 years of service by the Delaware Public Archives
This exhibit provides a wide variety of documents and photographs that tell the story of the First State. Some of the items have had a significant impact on the social, economic, and political lives of Delawareans, while other images reflect the cultural joys and concerns that take place in everyday life.
The Archives’ “Jewel Box”
Features a return visit of Delaware’s copy of the Bill of
Rights, which is permanently housed at the National Archives.

Interpreters in period clothing at the State House offer special focus tours on Delawareans and Dover residents in the Civil War as well as the actions that took place in the government offices.

Special Exhibition: Craft of the Peninsula
The Biggs Museum has partnered with the Delaware Agricultural Museum and Village to present a showcase for the work of regional craft artisans. The Peninsula has a long and rich tradition of craft production since before the earliest years of European colonization and settlement.
