Lewes Shipwreck Artifacts to be Displayed
at Old Dover Days on Saturday, May 7

May 5, 2005

DOVER - Mid-18th-century artifacts recently recovered from the shipwreck off Lewes Beach will be on display-with officials on hand to tell the story of these treasures-at The First State Heritage Park at Dover during Old Dover Days on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The display, on Legislative Mall, will feature artifacts of English and German manufacture, including a variety of stoneware, a case bottle base and top, tin and green-glazed pottery, and other items. They were recovered by divers exploring what archaeologists believe to be a cargo ship making a delivery of millstones and other supplies to southern Delaware.

The 72nd annual Old Dover Days event this year is being enriched by new and exciting programs presented by The First State Heritage Park at Dover. This year, Old Dover Days coincides with the "First Saturdays in the First State" programs sponsored by the Park. The Park is bringing musical performances to the Friday evening Art Loop and exciting new activities such as the shipwreck display to The Green and Legislative Mall on Saturday afternoon. All Park sites are open during Saturday's events.

The sites linked by The First State Heritage Park at Dover include Legislative Hall, Delaware Public Archives, the Old State House Museum and other Delaware State Museums sites, and the Biggs Museum of American Art Admission is free.
